General Rules, Exhibits and Information

GENERAL RULES

 

1.  The 2023 Fair will be held at New Kent Middle School on August 12th.

2.  Exhibits will be open:  Saturday:  10:00 AM – 5:00 PM.

3.  Home and Garden exhibits will be accepted Thursday, August 10th, between 3:00 PM and 8:00 PM. NO EXHIBITS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER 8:00 PM THURSDAY, except fresh flowers and baked goods for which entry cards have been entered on Thursday.  These entries may be brought between 9 AM and 10 AM on Friday, August 11th.

4.  All exhibits must be listed on an entry form and have an entry tag attached.  Call 932-3155 if you would like entry tags before Thursday.  You can also receive your exhibitor’s number at this number.  PLEASE LIST ENTRIES ON THE SHEET IN NUMERICAL ORDER BY CATEGORIES.

5.  No home or garden exhibits are to be removed, eaten, or handled until 5:00 PM Saturday and must be removed by 7:00 PM on Saturday.

6.  All exhibits must have been completed or grown by the exhibitor since last year’s fair.  Any exhibitor may enter any or all categories in each class as desired.  However, an individual may not enter two of the same item, either in the same category or by putting one in one category and another of the same kind in another category.  Under exhibitor’s choice, enter ONLY unusual items not found in the fair entry list.  Up to three items may be entered in each exhibitor’s choice category, provided each is a distinctly different item not otherwise listed.

7.  Each exhibitor must enter as either a resident or non-resident of New Kent County.   All exhibits must be completed only by the exhibitor.  All exhibits will be judged in two groups:  Adult and Youth.  Youth age groups are 5-8 years, 9-13 years, and 14-19 years.  (Age as of August 6.)

8.  There are special exhibits open only for youth in the younger age groups of 5-8 and 9 -13.

9.  The number of specimens to be displayed in each entry is clearly stated.  This should be adhered to by the exhibitor.

10.  Judging will begin in all departments on Friday at 10:00 A.M.  No spectators will be allowed in the exhibit area during judging. 

11.  Care will be taken to protect exhibits daily, but the committee will not assume responsibility for loss or damage either to person or property.  Under these conditions only, are exhibits accepted.

12.  Youth and Adult awards will be: 1st- Blue Ribbon, $1.00 cash, 4 points; 2nd – Red Ribbon, 50ȼ cash, 3 points; 3rd – White Ribbon, 25ȼ cash, 2 points.  If any item is outstanding in its class, a “Best in Show” ribbon will be awarded, $3.00 cash, and 6 points. 

13.  1st, 2nd, and 3rd place Sweepstakes Ribbons will be given to the three people (youth and adult) earning the largest number of points.  Only New Kent residents will be eligible for sweepstakes award ribbons.

14.  Cash awards and ribbons may be picked up  5:00 PM – 6:00PM on Saturday.

DIVISION B - CLASS XI Special Youth Exhibits

924      My best box brownies: use a basic box brownie mix, but do something special to make it your own.

 

925      Junk Container: use your imagination and use any piece of junk as a planter.  Fill with dirt and live plants to create a fun and functional planter.

926      Mr. Potato Head: select any potato and create a person, using the concept of “Mr. Potato Head.”  You may purchase your potato and you may use any other materials to create your person.

 

927        Legos: use Legos to create a unique, original sculpture.  This sculpture must be presented on a hard base (plywood, cardboard, etc)

 

928        Jack o’ Lantern: using a pumpkin, create a Jack o’Lantern using paint or markers.  Do NOT cut the pumpkin and you do not have to raise the pumpkin yourself.

 

929      School poster: enter a poster you created as a school project.

 

930      Illustrated poem:  an original poem of no more than 20 lines that you have added hand-drawn artwork to the paper it is written /printed on.

 

931      Classroom project: any three-dimensional project created during the past school year.
